Jackie Kegley September 19, 1939 - July 23, 2010

Jackie Kegley, age 70, of Kearney, died Friday July 23, 2010 at her home after a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Kearney with Rev. Gary Main officiating. Burial will be at the Prairie Center Cemetery at Haven’s Chapel. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Horner Lieske McBride & Kuhl Funeral and Cremation Services in Kearney and one hour prior to the service at the church. The family will be at the Funeral Home to greet friends Tuesday evening. Memorials are designated to the family to establish the Ron and Jackie Kegley family 4-H Scholarship Fund or the Donor’s choice. A message of condolence, tribute or memory can be left at

Jackie was born September 19, 1939 in Lincoln to Jack and Margaret (Leonard) Beard. She was raised in Lincoln and graduated from Lincoln Southeast High School in 1957. She graduated from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln with a Degree in Home Economics. During college she was a member of the Alpha Xi Delta Sorority. While in college she met Ron Kegley and they married on June 13, 1959 in Lincoln. They lived in Lincoln for 3 years while Jackie finished school and worked as a Home Economist at the gas company. They moved to Kearney in 1963 and Jackie taught High School Home Economics in Wood River for 2 years. They then moved to the farm 10 miles North of Kearney where they raised 3 children. In the mid 1980’s Jackie, with a business partner became owner of a women’s apparel store called the Gazebo. After retiring she pursued her interest in horticulture and started attending classes at Hastings Community College. She became a master gardener and shared her skill and knowledge with many. Jackie also enjoyed genealogy and traveled to Northern England to further her family research. Her greatest joy and sense of accomplishment came from spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Alpha Xi Delta Alumni, Our Afternoon Off Extension Club, and the Buffalo County Home Economist. She also enjoyed volunteering at the Good Samaritan Hospital Gift Shop.
