Ernest W. Schmidt, 78, of Kearney died Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at the Good Samaritan Society in Ravenna, NE. 

 

Funeral services will be Friday, July 23, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Kearney. Rev. James DeLoach will officiate and burial will be at the Kearney Cemetery. Visitation is planned Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Horner Lieske McBride & Kuhl Funeral and Cremation Services in Kearney. Memorials are suggested to the Zion Lutheran Church building fund. A condolence, tribute or memory can be left at www.hlmkfuneral.com. Horner Lieske McBride & Kuhl Funeral and Cremation Services in Kearney is in charge of arrangements.

 

He was born October 25, 1931 to Ernest A. and Mabel E. (Robbins) Schmidt at their home Madison, NE. He attended school in Madison then graduated High School from American School in Chicago, IL. 

 

He was baptized November 29, 1931 and confirmed April 14, 1946 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Madison. On October 25, 1949 he married Joan Upton in Madison. After graduation he had several jobs then started working for General Telephone in 1951 in Madison. He lived in Tilden, NE, Columbus, NE then moved back to Tilden. In 1968 he moved to Kearney and was a maintenance supervisor for General Telephone. He retired in 1989 after 37 years of service with G.T.E. 

 

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. He was active hunter and fisherman with his son and grandsons. He was a faithful member of the N.R.A.
