Betty L. Bethell, 87, of Kearney, died January 17, 2022 at Kearney Regional Medical Center. Private family graveside services will be January 24, 2022 at Woodlawn Cemetery Pomona, Kansas. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the Kearney Area Animal Shelter or the Iain Nicolson Audubon Center at Rowe Sanctuary. Betty Lou Bethell was born to Ralph H. and Callie K. (Grimes) Bethell of Pomona, Kansas on January 25, 1934. She attended Pomona High School then went on to get her Masters in Physical Education/Dance at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas. She taught PE for one year in Manhattan, Kansas. before finding her home in Kearney, teaching at Kearney State College/UNK for four decades. Betty was a patron of the arts, a Yankees fan, and a die-hard Jayhawker. She loved a good English mystery—Agatha Christie in particular—and a fine Manhattan. She is survived by her partner Frank Robinson of Kearney, George the cat, nieces, Shawna M Bethell of Fulton, MO., Sandra K (Bethell) Abel of Carbondale, KS., Glenna R (Bethell) Guerrero of Topeka, KS., and nephew, Jim Phillips of Lawrence, KS. Betty also had many great and great-great nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by both parents and two brothers, Richard W. Bethell and Robert H. Bethell, both of Pomona, and a nephew Michael W. Bethell of Fulton, MO.
