Jerry L. Hartman, 76, of Kearney, passed away Friday, July 30, 2021, at Good Samaritan Society – St. John’s in Kearney after a long battle with kidney cancer. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, August 5, 2021, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church with Pastor John Rasmussen officiating. Graveside services will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 6, 2021, at the Kearney Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., August 4, 2021, at Horner Lieske McBride & Kuhl Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Holy Cross Lutheran Church or St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Jerry was born on February 7, 1945, in Lincoln, NE to Lloyd R. and Mary (Hopper) Hartman. He attended school in Lincoln and graduated in 1963 from University High. He then joined the National Guard and became a Lieutenant. On September 2, 1967, he was united in marriage to Sharilyn (Shari) Kahle at Zion Lutheran Church in Kearney. They have two children. In 1968 he started working for Kings Food Host Restaurants in Lincoln. They moved to Kearney where later he became district manager for Kearney, Grand Island, Hastings, and North Platte locations. In 1973 he began managing the Fort Kearney Inn. The Dixie Land Band was very popular in the lounge. In 1980 he left the Fort Kearney Inn to begin a Pawnshop in Hastings, NE, eventually opening a second location in Lexington, NE. He also wrote bail bonds for many years. He then retired in 2001 following a disabling car accident, to spend more time with family, traveling, and especially spending time with his grandkids. Survivors include his wife Shari of Kearney; daughter Becky (Aaron) Axtell of Minden NE and their children, Ashleigh Axtell (Kyle Jauken), Austin Axtell, Mitchell Axtell, and Matthew Axtell; daughter Allison (Patrick) Quiroz of Exeter CA. and their children, Kassandra Quiroz, Theodore Quiroz, Luke Quiroz, and Owen Quiroz; a brother Larry (Loretta) Hartman of Hickman, NE; brothers-in-law Ronald (Judy) Kahle of Texas and Alton (Cathy) Kahle of Kearney; sister-in-law LaNita (David) Wilke, also of Kearney; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant daughter Catherine and niece Amanda Johnson.
