Edna L. Wimmer

Edna L. Wimmer, age 90 of Kearney, Formerly of Oxford, NE, went to her Heavenly Home on Monday, May 15, 2017 at the Mt. Carmel Home and Rehabilitation Center in Kearney. Memorial services will be on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at Horner Lieske McBride & Kuhl Funeral and Cremation Services in Kearney. Pastor Duane Duley will officiate and burial will be at 2:30 p.m. at Ft. McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell, NE. There will be no visitation. Memorials in lieu of flowers are suggested to Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Kearney, St. John’s Lutheran Church in Oxford or the American Cancer Society. Edna was born on December 14, 1926 to Erich and Leona (Heins) Miller in Keeline, WY. She moved with her family to Stover, MO and attended rural elementary school through the 8th grade. Edna was always very proud of what she was able to accomplish in life in spite of her 8th grade education. After she completed rural school her family sent her to Nanny for a Jewish family in St. Louis. While in St. Louis, Edna also worked at a local drug store on her one day off from Nanning. It was at that store, on Grand Avenue, that she met a young pilot in training named Bernard. Bernard asked Edna to marry him on the day after she pinned on his pilot wings. They were married on June 28, 1944 in Fredrick, Oklahoma. The couple eventually moved to Oxford, NE where they owned/operated the Oxford Standard Newspaper until their retirement in 1983. They were blessed with two children, Bruce and Judith. Edna stayed active in her community and her church, often volunteering her time and talents. She enjoyed tending a large garden, crocheting and crafts. Edna especially enjoyed furthering her education at any opportunity. Edna and Bernard moved to Kearney in 2003 due to medical reasons. She was very thankful for the long life and long marriage she was blessed with. Edna was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Oxford and later Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Kearney. Edna is survived by her Husband, Bernard of Kearney; Son, Bruce Wimmer and his wife Teresa of Springhill, FL; Daughter, Judith Upson and her husband Ron of Beaver City, NE; 3 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; Sister, Viola Mueller of Kansas City, MO; Sisters in law, Betty Miller of Kearney, MO and Darlene Pettygrove of Centralia, IL; Brother-in-law, Sherman Stokes of Overland Park, KS; also numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family Edna was preceded in death by her Parents; Parents in law, E.E. and Merle (Guggenmos) Wimmer; 2 Brothers, LeRoy Miller and Marvin Miller; 2 Sisters, Evelyn Stokes and Ida Mae Walcott; Brothers in law, Harold Mueller, Bill Walcott and Robert Pettygrove
