Irene V. Young

Irene V. Young, 91, Kearney, died Monday, November 23, 2015 at Mother Hull Home in Kearney. Funeral services will be Monday, November 30, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church in Cambridge with Pastor Tim Burke officiating. Burial will be Fairview Cemetery in Cambridge. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Monday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the family to be designated later. Irene was born October 4, 1924 in Genoa, Nebraska to Gilbert and Theresa (Fertig) Johnson, the sixth of their eight children. She grew up on a farm near Albion and attended a rural school through eighth grade and graduated from Albion High School in 1942. She was baptized into Christ as a young girl and was a member of the Church of Christ in Albion. Irene married Gerald Packard on June 1, 1942. In September of 1942 she moved with Gerald to California and Arizona as he served in the Army Air Corp. In 1946 they returned to Albion where they worked together running a Flying Service and farm. She also worked as a nurse’s aid at the Boone County Hospital. In 1972 Irene moved with her children to Axtell where she was the secretary for Deluxe Manufacturing. She and Gerald divorced in 1972. Irene married John Metzger on March 1, 1974 and moved to Cambridge Ne. Irene and John built their home on the edge of town and raised Paint horses and ran a hay business. She became an active member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Cambridge. She also worked as a nurse’s aid at the Cambridge hospital and as a secretary at Besler Industries. John passed away in 1986. Irene continued to work and was active in her church. In 1991 she met Warren Young. They married on June 19, 1992 and shared six loving years together before he was killed in a car accident August of 1998. Irene continued to do volunteer work in her community and church and was known for her caring and serving heart and her amazing pies. Due to her declining health she moved to the Gibbon/Kearney area and lived out her remaining years. Irene is survived by her sons, Greg Packard and wife Alice of Prescott, AZ, George Packard and wife Denise of New Braunfels, TX; daughters, Shelia Bond and husband Dwight of Gibbon, NE, Teresa Scott and husband Brian of Sand Springs, OK, brother Harold Johnson and wife Marilyn of Peoria, AZ; step-daughters, Patricia Sayer of Cambridge, NE, Joyce Minnick and husband Rich of Indianola, NE; step-sons, Gary Metzger and wife Lori of Arapahoe, NE, Larry Young and wife Mary Jo of Cambridge, NE, Delton Young and wife Vickie of McCook, NE; step-daughter in-law, Judy Metzger of Arapahoe, NE; 32 grandchildren, 63 great grandchildren, and 10 great great grandchildren. She was beloved to many and will be greatly missed. Irene was preceded in death by her husbands, 1 brother, 2 sisters, and 3 step-children.
