Mary Lou (Gehrig) Boyll

Mary Lou Gehrig was born in Phillipsburg, Kansas on March 25, 1948 to Johnnie (Bud) Gehrig and his wife, Ruth (Pohlenz) Gehrig. She grew up on her family farm, southwest of Orleans, Nebraska. She was raised in the house her great grandfather built in 1905. The house was made up with many memories of past and present family. She loved it and all the fun she had with cousins. She remained an only child for 11 years and then welcomed her brother Roger in 1959. In the 1950’s children went to the school close to their home, therefore, Mary Lou received her schooling in Long Island, Kansas and graduated with the class of 1966. She entered the work force with a job as a clerk, for the City of Alma in Nebraska. She worked there for six years and then was employed for the Harlan County Bank in Alma until her marriage. On October 25, 1975 she was united in marriage to William “Bill” Boyll of Holdrege, Nebraska at her home church, Long Island Methodist. The couple made their home in Holdrege where she worked as a bookkeeper for Educational Service Unit #11. She took a hiatus from outside work to raise and enjoy her three sons, Jay, Travis (Isabelle) and Scott (Erin). She always wanted to be a mom and her boys fulfilled that dream! She enjoyed her family, caring for and decorating her home, flowers, and her yard. She also so enjoyed bible studies and friends. The friendships she made were unique and life giving. The family started attending North Park Assembly in Holdrege in September 1980. She made a decision on October 5, 1980 to ask Jesus to live in her heart. She taught Sunday School, Bible School, helped with fellowship dinners, nursery and was the chairwoman of Women’s Ministries. Once her sons were in school, she returned to the work force. She was introduced to a new career that she had a passion for, working with preschoolers. She worked for the Educational Service Unit #11 preschool - Bethel Lutheran’s Tutoring Tots, where she was known as Mrs. B, and also worked at Head Start in Holdrege. It was 23 years of fun and growth. As her sons married, she was blessed with two daughters-in-law, Isabelle and Erin. “The girls” taught her a lot about herself and women in general and she loved “her girls”. In June 2001, Mary Lou and Bill started attending New Life Church in Kearney, Nebraska. After visiting the church for numerous events, their hearts were with the ministry of the church. The difference was a “personal relationship with the Lord”. She had asked Jesus into her life but found she needed the relationship to grow. This began her “beautiful journey” and her relationship with the Lord. Psalm 9:10 became her life verse, “Those who know your name will trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you”, NIV. The song “You Raise Me Up” became her theme song as well as a praise chorus by Hillsong, “Shout to the Lord”. God gave her a love for people, and she expressed that love through hugs. In 2005 the blessing of grandchildren began. Oh, how she loved being Grammy to her nine grandchildren, Trevor, Tyler, Ian, Leo, Ava, Addi, Drew, Becca and Eli. She found it so true, the saying, “there is a different love for grandkids!”. Left to mourn her passing are her husband of 50 years, William (Bill) Boyll; her three sons, Jay, Travis (Isabelle), and Scott (Erin); her nine grandchildren; and her brother Roger Gehrig (Micki).
