Monica M. Stefan

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Monica (Nickie to some) M. Stefan, who peacefully departed this life on Tuesday, June 23, 2026 at the age of 85. Born in the vibrant city of Los Angeles, California, on December 21, 1940, Monica was the middle child of Frances Edward Deegan and Anne Marie (Persich) Deegan. Monica embarked on a distinguished career in Nursing, graduating from Mercy College of Nursing San Diego, class of 1961. She earned top honors and consistently ranked the top of her class. During her career, her dedication was exemplary, demonstrating an innate talent and deep compassion for patient care. Monica truly embodied the noble spirit of nursing, tirelessly dedicating herself to alleviating suffering and supporting others through her career. Monica mostly focused her professional care on Medical/Surgical floor but later was certified to be a chemo nurse and then Hospice Care. In 1961, Monica met the love of her life, Chuck, in San Diego. When Chuck’s career necessitated a move back East, Monica faithfully followed. They soon married in Ithica, New York, on December 26, 1961, before establishing their home first in Ledyard, Connecticut, and later in Oneco, Connecticut. In 1975, Chuck’s employment led the family back to California, where they settled in Corona. Upon their respective retirements, Monica and Chuck embraced a new chapter moving to and making their final home in Kearney, Nebraska. Beyond her professional endeavors, Monica found immense joy in her personal life. She cherished time spent with her family, particularly delighting in spoiling her grandchildren. Her creative spirit shone through her passions for sewing and crafting intricate baby quilts, which brought warmth and comfort to many. She also found solace and adventure within the pages of a good book. Monica had a deep faith and loved to read and study the Bible. Monica is survived by her beloved sister, Anne Pering of Chula Vista, California, and her enduring legacy lives on through her much loved children: Chuck and his wife, Leanne, Margaret, Dan and his wife Jill, and Dave. She is also a cherished nana to Charles and his wife Dorian, Tiffany and her husband Joel, Christian, Timothy, Tristina and her husband MacKenzie, and Rachel and her husband Thomas; and a proud nana to four great-grandchildren, Kamren, Trevor, Baylee and Olivia. Monica was preceded in death by her wonderful husband, Charles William Stefan, who passed away May 28, 2020, and also her dear brother Edward Francis Deegan who passed away in March 2026.
