Robert A. ?Al, Zum? ZumBrunnen, 68, of Kearney, died Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney after an aggressive battle with cancer. Funeral services will be Monday, June 20, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at First Lutheran Church in Kearney.Rev. Eric Lesher and Rev. Rebecca Craig will officiate. Private burial services will precede services at the Kearney Cemetery.There will be no visitation.Memorials are planned to the memorial flag pole fund at Kearney Cemetery, First Lutheran Church or to the donor?s choice.A message of condolence, tribute, or memory can be left at www.hlmkfuneral.com.Horner Lieske McBride & Kuhl Funeral and Cremation Services of Kearney are in charge of arrangements. Allen was the middle child born June 18, 1942 in Kearney to Aubrey and Ella (Swanson) ZumBrunnen.He attended Kearney Public Schools and graduated from Kearney High School in 1960.After high school he attended Kearney State College and the University of Wyoming in Laramie.He served in the National Guard from 1964 through 1970.After returning to Kearney, he worked for and later purchased Nebraska Irrigation Engineering, Inc.In 1988 he began working for Broadfoot Sand and Gravel where he continued to work until his death. He was confirmed in the First Lutheran Church of Kearney in1956 and was still a member of that congregation. On January 28, 1967 he married Candace Vaught of Wayne, NE, they have three children. Allen?s interests included cars, car races, John Deere tractors, Wyoming ranches, and the farm.On weekends you would most likely find him watching the NASCAR races on television.He loved his family and his grandchildren.It was always fun to reminisce with him.He loved to ?show? places in Kearney where he was working or in which he had a specific interest. Surviving relatives include his wife Candace of Kearney and their 3 children and families:Troy and wife Gwen, grandchildren Bryson and Breck of Libertyville, Illinois; Tyler and wife Brandee, granddaughter Kealy of Kearney and Anne of Omaha, NE.He is also survived by his mother in law; Charlotte Vaught of Wayne, NE, sister; Carol Waggoner and husband Ivan of Norfolk, NE and brother; David and wife Cheryl of Wasilla, Alaska and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
