Zelma M. Lindau

Zelma M. Lindau, 93, of Kearney, died Saturday, March 18, 2017 at the Mt. Carmel Home and Rehabilitation Center in Kearney. Memorial services will be on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at 9:30 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Kearney. Rev. Melody Adams will officiate and burial will be at Kearney Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the Ora and Zelma Lindau Foundation at the University of Nebraska Kearney or First United Methodist Church. Zelma was born in Litchfield, Nebraska on April 11, 1923 to Charles and Opal (Bennett) Shaffer. She grew up in Litchfield, graduating from Litchfield High School in 1940. She taught in a one room school house for 2 years; and the first 4 grades of a school, called Wiggle Creek. She attended Kearney State College, where she met her future husband, Ora (Lindy) Lindau. While Lindy was in the Navy, they married on July 22, 1943, in San Francisco, California. Their first son, James, was born in Compton, California in June 1944. Their second son, Charles, was born in Kearney, Nebraska in November 1946. Lindy taught in Goodland, Kansas where their last son, Thomas was born in November 1952. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Kearney. She spent her time volunteering at MONA, Frank House, Red Cross Bloodmobile, Sunday school teacher, meals on wheels, Cub Scout leader and received a lifetime PTA Award. Her favorite place to volunteer was at the Gift Shop at Good Samaritan Hospital. She loved to play bridge and enjoyed her garden club. She loved to knit and crochet making many newborn stocking caps for Good Samaritan Hospital. Her yard and flowers were her pride and joy, planting tuberous begonias for her oldest granddaughters wedding in 1997. She was an avid jogger and enjoyed early morning jogs with her dear friend Ilene Jasa. Survivors include, sons James and wife Marcia of Axtell, NE, Charles and wife Karen of Baton Rouge, LA and Thomas of Kearney, NE, grandchildren Brock (Lisa) of Blair, NE, Carrie (Marc) Regier of Hampton, NE, Brandon (Lisa) of Garland, NE, Brett (Marissa) of Mc Cook, NE, Amberly (Charles) Nunez of Baton Rouge, LA and John Lindau of Baton Rouge, LA, twelve great grandchildren, Zachary and Lucy Lindau of Blair, NE, Cooper, Hudson and Jagger Regier of Hampton, NE, Kohltyn, Deklan and Evelyn Lindau of Garland, NE and Malachi, Lainey and Jackson Lindau of Mc Cook, NE, Ellie Nunez of Baton Rouge, LA, and brother Jerry Curry (Pat) of Fort Collins CO. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother-in-law Earl Lindau and his wife Freda of Hildreth, NE, sister-in-law Violet Schurmann and her husband Harold of Hildreth, NE, sister-in-law Fern Warnken and her husband, Fred of Hildreth, NE, and sister Evelyn Metz and her husband, Robert of Pleasanton, NE.
