Charles M. Hunnel

Charles M. “Charlie” Hunnel, 85, of Kearney, died Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at St. John’s Good Samaritan Center in Kearney. A Mass of Christian burial will be Saturday, February 8, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church in Kearney with Father Alex Borzych. Burial will follow at the Paxton, NE Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. Mountain time with Father Bryan Ernest. Military Honors will be provided at graveside. Visitation will be Friday, February 7, 2014 from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. at St. James Catholic Church followed by a vigil wake service at 6:00 p.m. Memorials are suggested to St. James Catholic Church or St. John’s Good Samaritan Center. Charlie was born on January 1, 1929 in Elm Creek, NE to Lewis and Carrie (Weaver) Hunnel. He attended Kearney High School and graduated with the class of 1946. He then earned a Bachelors Degree from Kearney State College, a Masters Degree from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and a Professional Degree from the University of Wyoming. He married Anna Mae Newcomb on January 20, 1951 in Kearney. He served his country as a member of the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Charlie started his career as a teacher and later became a Principal and eventually a Superintendent. He also worked for the United States Post Office before he retired. He was a member of the Lions Club and the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of St. James Catholic Church in Kearney. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family. Surviving relatives include his wife Anna Mae of Kearney; Sons Wayne Hunnel of Gibbon and Ward Hunnel of Kearney; Daughter Judy Crumly and her husband Art of Casper, WY; Sister in law, Maxine Hunnel of Kearney; Grandchildren and spouses, Mark and Shirin Oman of California, Mickey and Tracy Oman of Chicago, IL, Carrie Rogers of Evansville, WY, Kim Crumly of Casper, WY, Matt Hunnel of Chicago, IL and Darren Hunnel of Gibbon, NE; Great Grandchildren, Jessica Oman, Joe Oman and Nick Dreksler, all of Chicago, IL.
