John O. Detter Jr

John O. Detter, Jr. age 78, of Kearney, died Tuesday, July 4, 2023 at Mother Hull Home in Kearney. Memorial services will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 29, 2023 at Horner Lieske McBride & Kuhl Funeral Home with Becky Daire, a very close family friend, as officiant. Military honors will follow at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the family to be designated at a later date. John was born June 21st, 1945 in Kearney to John and Marjorie (Erpelding) Detter. John lived most of his childhood between Kearney and Dover Pennsylvania. He received his diploma from Kearney High School. John had ambitions to go to school to be an architect but was drafted into the Vietnam War in 1966. He returned home to his first-born son Randy in 1968, and in 1969 he welcomed his second son Kevin. John worked for Glass Wholesale, Caldwell’s, Howland, and eventually Eaton’s, from which he retired from after 32 years. John’s hobbies included fishing, hunting, golfing, bowling, and cheering on the Huskers, Braves and Raiders. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. John also enjoyed spending his time at Chug-A-Lug where he made many friends which turned to family. He loved old western movies and listening to Johnny Cash. John was a very generous, caring, and kindhearted man. He was also a very opinionated, strong willed, stubborn man who refused to be wrong, even if google told him so. Left to cherish his memory are his sons, Randy (Vickie) Detter of Beatrice and Kevin (Becki) Detter Sr. of Kearney; his three grandchildren, Kevin Detter Jr. of Kearney, Amber Detter of Bellevue, and Ashley Detter of Kearney; two bonus grandchildren, Shelbi Miller (Kevin’s fiancé) of Kearney and Adam Kehl (Ashley’s spouse) of Kearney; six great grandchildren, Mason, Kyanna, Adley, Julian, Adam Jr., and Zane all of Kearney; and many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. Surviving siblings include Terry Detter of Grand Island, Ronnie Detter of Sumner, NE., and Loretta Whiteface of Grand Island. John was proceeded in death by his parents; a sister Mary Ann; brothers, Danny and David; and a niece Melissa.
