Lyle B. Long, age 88, of Kearney, died Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at his home.Funeral Services will be Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at Horner Lieske McBride & Kuhl Funeral and Cremation Services in Kearney with Pastor Dave Dickinson officiating.Military rites will be provided by the Kearney American Legion Post #52, Kearney V.F.W. Post #759 and the Nebraska National Guard Military Honors Team.Visitation will be Tuesday, June 21, 2011 from 4:00 ? 8:00 pm at Horner Lieske McBride & Kuhl Funeral and Cremation Services in Kearney.Burial will be at a later date.Memorials are suggested to Hope Free Church, care of the family.A message of condolence, tribute, or memory may be sent to www.hlmkfuneral.comHorner Lieske McBride & Kuhl Funeral and Cremation Services of Kearney is in charge of arrangements. Lyle was born on July 20, 1922 in rural Amherst, NE to Roy Howard and Maggie (Williams) Long.He attended school in Amherst until he was forced to quit and return home to help on the family farm.He married Betty Swain on June 2, 1943 in Lexington, NE.Lyle served his country while enlisted in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1946.He worked the majority of his life as a bridge builder for the railroad.He was a member of the Kearney American Legion Post #52 and the Kearney Eagles Lodge #2720.He enjoyed reading, especially books and articles about health.He also had a love for Lapidary work and owned his own stone saw.
